Overview Since its founding in 1991, Aim High has served middle school students in grades five through eight. The middle school program features:
- An intensive five-week summer school that includes a rigorous academic schedule, athletic training and cultural enrichment opportunities.
- Door-to-door transportation to/from students' homes and Aim High campuses. We adjust our transportation routes to accommodate students who move.
- Monthly sessions on Saturday mornings during the school year that include standardized test training, field trips, and other academic and cultural enrichment opportunities.
- Continuity. When students join Aim High in fifth grade, they may continue with the program through high school. Most stick with the program at least through eighth grade. Aim High is designed to provide continuity and follow-up for students so they can continue to learn and grow throughout these crucial, formative years.
Curriculum The Aim High curriculum is designed to strengthen the students' skills in the core courses of language, history, math and science, and to enrich their understanding of the world through performing arts, athletics and interpersonal development. The curriculum focuses on:
- Reading, writing, vocabulary and research skills.
- Math and science skills.
- Study skills (with emphasis on exploring, understanding, and discussing political and economic systems and contemporary issues).
- Multicultural awareness and appreciation. Interpersonal and leadership skills.
- Computer skills (word processing, programming and reinforcement of math and language skills).
Electives and Special Training
- Electives. The program offers a wide range of interesting and challenging electives such as journalism, arts, drama, computer, investment club, sports, yearbooks, and Spanish.
- Assembly. Aim High has a daily, morning assembly which focuses on problem solving, group dynamics and character building.
- One-to-one support. Aim High tutorial sessions and advisor/advisee meetings are an integral part of the program. These two aspects of the program promote positive interpersonal relationships, self-esteem, self-confidence and group cooperation.
