The Program

Overview

Since its founding in 1991, Aim High has served middle school students in grades five through eight. The middle school program features:
  • An intensive five-week summer school that includes a rigorous academic schedule, physical activity and cultural enrichment opportunities.
  • Transportation from designated partner schools to Aim High campuses and back.
  • Monthly sessions on Saturday mornings during the school year that include standardized test training, field trips, and other academic and cultural enrichment opportunities.
  • Continuity. When students join Aim High in fifth grade, they are expected to continue with the program through eighth grade. Aim High is designed to provide continuity and follow-up for students so they can continue to learn and grow throughout these crucial, formative years.
Curriculum

The Aim High curriculum is designed to strengthen the students' skills in the core courses of language, history, math and science, and to enrich their understanding of the world through performing arts, athletics and interpersonal development. The curriculum focuses on:
  • Reading, writing, vocabulary and research skills.
  • Math and science skills.
  • Study skills (with emphasis on exploring, understanding, and discussing political and economic systems and contemporary issues).
  • Multicultural awareness and appreciation. Interpersonal and leadership skills.
  • Computer skills (word processing, programming and reinforcement of math and language skills).

  • Electives. The program offers a wide range of interesting and challenging electives such as journalism, arts, drama, computer, investment club, sports, yearbooks, and Spanish.
  • Assembly. Aim High has a daily, morning assembly which focuses on problem solving, group dynamics and character building.
  • One-to-one support. Aim High tutorial sessions and advisor/advisee meetings are an integral part of the program. These two aspects of the program promote positive interpersonal relationships, self-esteem, self-confidence and group cooperation.
RECRUITMENT
Students from a partner school are recommended by their principal or teacher to learn more about Aim High at specially scheduled recruitment sessions. Interested students must complete an application for admission that includes an essay, parent sections and a teacher nomination form. Beginning in the 2010 summer program, all participants must also provide a parent-authorized release of their school records. Once accepted, students attend an orientation session at their assigned campus with a parent, guardian or other supervisory adult. Criteria we look for when recruiting Aim High candidates:
  • 5th grade enrollment at a public or charter partner school (we cannot accept applications from students currently enrolled in private or gifted schools; on rare occasions, we may accept applications from students in the 6th grade)
  • a school attendance rate of 75% or higher
  • grade history in the 'B' or 'C' range with demonstrated potential to achieve at higher levels
  • a strong preference is made for students qualifying for the free/reduced lunch program
New 5th grade cohorts are currently recruited from schools in the St. Louis Public schools, the former Wellston district, and from Maplewoods/Richmond Heights elementary.
